About Royal Mills

Nestled within the heart of Ancoats and on the banks of the Rochdale Canal, Royal Mills is one of the city centre’s largest and most loved conversion developments. Royal Mills is an early 20th-century cotton mill which was built around 1912. It was originally named New Old Mill but was renamed following a royal visit by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1942. A plaque commemorates the occasion. The mill was given a Grade II Listed status in 1988, and in 2003 after years of neglect and decay, a restoration scheme costing approximately £65 million was announced and the mill was converted into a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments which retained the buildings many original features throughout.
